Happy Wild Wednesday! Are you ready for an exciting, once-in-a-lifetime natural event?😮Cicadas who have been in the ground as young nymphs for either 13 or 17 years in several eastern states will emerge in synchronized timing this Spring! This occurs only once every 221 years. In Southern Wisconsin, we'll see (and hear) Brood XIII, 17-year periodical cicadas of the genus Magicicada. These are black with red eyes, different from cicadas we see more frequently. Emerged adults sing to find mates, and their young, laid in eggs in tree branches, will hatch in late summer to make their way to the soil to start the process again. Why is this a good thing? The over-abundance of harmless cicadas allows some to survive and reproduce, because birds, bats, toads, salamanders, other insects and small mammals will feast! (So pesticides will harm all animals in this food chain.) Their burrows aerate soil. Their bodies add Nitrogen and other nutrients to soil. So park a lawn chair and enjoy!
