Speaker's Topic:
Monitoring and restoring Wisconsin Wetlands:
A case study from the East Branch Pecatonica River floodplain
Wetlands are critically important components of Wisconsin's landscape due to the vast amount of services that they provide society including flood peak reduction, water quality improvement, biodiversity support, recreation, and aesthetics. As a wetland scientist, I am interested in how wetlands are formed through natural processes, how they may have been degraded, and how they may be restored to a more natural state. Specifically, I focus on the relationship between soil wetness and the presence of particular plant species. In order to do this, I first need to understand how water gets to, is stored within, and travels through a wetland system. I will discuss my research on a floodplain restoration project in the unglaciated Driftless Area of southwestern Wisconsin and also make connections with wetlands and flood plains in the glaciated region around Retzer.
